There is no shortage of quotes about hair and how important it is to people. It is, after all, 90 percent of the perfect selfie. All Pinterest quotes aside; however, hair is a source of immense pride and confidence that can be severely impacted by hair loss.

August is Hair Loss Awareness Month, and we feel it is a good reminder to up your game on what you know about this sensitive subject. Not only can you be your client’s greatest resource for recommending the perfect cut, color and products, but you can also lend a sympathetic ear to listen to what he or she is going through.

The causes for hair loss are endless, and the effects are felt in a way that can be downright debilitating. Men and women experience hair loss in different ways with men starting to experience significant hair loss much earlier than most women — 40 percent of men starting at the age of 35. In the United States, 35 million men and 21 million women are challenged with losing what was once a full and healthy head of hair, according to the Statistic Brain Research Institute. This survey states that 47 percent of hair-loss patients claimed they would give up their life savings to regain their full head of hair. That gives you an idea of how sensitive this subject truly is.

Our partners at Modern Salon also approach this topic by highlighting the ways men and women communicate about hair loss when in the salon chair. Women tend to communicate more freely than most men, but the general concerns and questions tend to be similar — from how to cut or style the hair to make it appear more voluminous to how to detract from specific areas of concern.

As a stylist and salon owner, listening to your client is half the journey. There are numerous products designed to address thinning hair concerns. It is critical for your client-stylist relationship that you are up to date on how these products work so that you are prepared to offer the best solutions.

Hair growth can change during a lifetime, so it is important to engage in a consultation every time you see your client.

  1. Identify the Need – Have a clear understanding of what your client is truly concerned about. The consultation should be more conversational, understanding their lifestyle, challenges and concerns, how they style their hair and how much time they have to support their challenges. To gain this information it is important to use open-ended questions as well as to open the conversation by sitting eye level or in a private consultation area.
  2. Discuss & Educate – Once you've discussed your client's needs it is easy to navigate through products to narrow down the best solution. Having a good understanding of the products available and why they are needed will help support the conversation and importance of following a customized plan.
  3. Recommend A Customized Plan – If ever unsure, prioritize your client's concerns. Often the appropriate 3-part System is the best place for starting a foundation you can then build upon.

Lastly, whenever performing a thorough consultation and service, don’t treat people the way you want to be treated, treat people the way THEY want to be treated!
